DeWanda Jones Nelson

DeWanda Jones Nelson is the 46th President of the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. DeWanda is “Sew“ Humble to Serve, “Threading”: Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service! 

DeWanda, as a little girl, observed her mother working hard and dedicated to DST and followed in the footsteps of her mother, Linda Irby Jones, a charter member of the Columbus-Lowndes (Mississippi) Alumnae Chapter, and aspired to be a legacy of her mother’s commitment and dedication to Delta. DeWanda was initiated, spring 1993, with her triplet sisters, Denise Jones Gregory also a member of the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter and Dionne Jones Woody, a charter member of Madison County (Mississippi) Alumnae Chapter, through the Delta Pi Chapter on the campus of Jackson State University “THEE I LOVE”. 

She has actively been engaged and served BAC since joining in September 2006 in various capacities serving as Vice president, Financial Secretary (2 Terms), Assistant Financial Secretary (2 Terms), Policies and Procedures/Rules of Order Committee Chair, Delta GEMS Chair (2 Terms), Minerva Circle, Executive Committee, Executive Board, and serving as a member on various committees. She has and currently serves the Sigma Eta Chapter at Samford University as a member of the advisor council and secondary advisor since spring 2010. 

In addition to her commitment and dedication to DST, DeWanda serves on the Regional Leadership Team, Membership Services Committee under the leadership of Birmingham Alumnae Chapter member, Deidra K. Diaz, Southern Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. 

DeWanda is an executive board member of the George “Happy” Irby Children’s Christmas Fund for Children. She is a lifetime member of her “Dear Ole College Home” Jackson State University National Alumni Association. DeWanda is a past member, serving nine years, in Jack and Jill of America, Inc. 

In DeWanda’s professional life, she exemplifies her leadership serving our future generation as the Assistant Principal at Vincent Middle High School, Shelby County School District.  

DeWanda is married to Zachary Nelson. They are the proud parents of two college sons, Zachary (ZJ) Nelson, II and Zane Nelson. DeWanda is thankful for her husband, sons, mother, father, and sisters’ love and support as she leads and serves the sisterhood of the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter “With a Spirit of Fortitude”.
